WHEN THE CONDUCT OF HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS IS SO OUTRAGEOUS AND CLEARLY CONTRARY TO APPLICABLE STANDARDS OF CARE, PUNITIVE DAMAGES CAN BE AWARDED. Often, there is a direct correlation between the amount of punitive damages awarded and the extent to which the conduct is outrageous and violative of applicable standards of care. That was the situation in this unusual case in which a patient was perceived by a jury to have been battered from pillar to post by a total failure to comply with basic standards of applicable nursing care!
